Leveraging the Power (and Popularity) of 3D GIS Tools

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are undergoing a transformative evolution, transcending their traditional boundaries to cater to diverse industries. This evolution encompasses key trends reshaping GIS applications across various sectors. Here are the main ones I expect to impact our work:

3D GIS – Where professionals start playing

As consumers, we have already come to understand and experience the sheer ‘magic’ of 3D technology that gives us the perception of depth similar to a real-world object. Commonly used in movies, video games, graphics, and virtual reality (VR), 3D is already becoming a standard in consumer-driven applications.

The next phase, however, is expanding the use of 3D technology into professional applications, and integrating it even further, into integrated data. The integration between 3D and GIS is reshaping spatial understanding. This year, we can expect to see many of these applications revolutionizing urban planning, transportation, real estate, and homeland security industries.

The emphasis on user-friendliness is democratizing GIS usage and eliminating technical barriers.

Real-Time Feeds

Real-time data integration from external sources such as drones and call centers into cloud-based GIS platforms is equipping non-GIS professionals with up-to-the-minute insights, amplifying informed actions and strategic planning.

Integration of external data sources into the GIS platforms will continue to be key for significant value. With this, we will see more integration of real-time feeds. Powered by live video feeds from drones, municipal call center tickets, or live reporting of emergency and security events, all will be streamed in real-time into the GIS platforms especially 3D GIS, to get a full picture in just a prompt sight.

AI’s Evolution – Revealing the unseen

Until recently it was hard to imagine how AI can automatically identify seen objects and elements such as buildings, trees, or roads and classify them. The evolution of AI is deepening and broadening. First, advanced AI technologies can now identify higher and higher levels of detail. Not only it can identify a building, but it can identify the exact surface, roof, and materials. But the real breakthrough in spatial reality is the ability to reveal “unseen” information and details. For example, providing the Digital Terrain Models for urban environments automatically, or large scale automatic photogrammetry building layers with engineering scale.

Collaborative Platforms – Uniting Stakeholders

Collaborative GIS systems are fostering unity among diverse stakeholders like architects, municipalities, and construction companies, facilitating decision-making and planning on a shared platform. All stakeholders become an integral part of the decision-making process, where they can visualize, analyze, plan, and manage projects, and ‘communicate’ with one another – all on the same platform, all using the same data.

The ability to immediately and seamlessly collaborate, where all project stakeholders can work on a shared platform, was prompted by the move from on-premise to cloud-based applications that enable multiple users to work together in real-time.
